Mums are always on the go, and what I love most is a mumma who knows that if she isn’t filling her body with the right fuel, she’s not able to best care for her little ones. Healthy options for refuelling don’t have to be hard to prepare and they can taste great too. One of the best ways to fill up without reaching for the naughty snack jar, is to make a quick, tasty banana smoothie. What’s best, is you can create variations on the traditional recipe for fun and I’m pretty sure the kids will enjoy it too!
Did you know that as well as providing your body the right types of fuel for sustained activities, bananas offer serious mood-lifting power? Bananas are high in Tryptophan, a mood-stabilising amino acid! Add this to piles of organ-supporting potassium, energising vitamins B6, A, and C, fibre, iron and protein, bananas are one of the best when it comes to mood-boosting, energy-fuelled snacks. So, enough of the technical talk – here’s a great recipe you can use to get your kick of banana smoothie goodness!
If you like your smoothies a little thicker and colder in the warm weather, just add some ice cubes.
For a banana smoothie with even more punch, add a handful of spinach, a tablespoon of ground flaxseed, and half a cup of apple juice. Spinach is one of the richest food sources of folate (vitamin B9) you can find, and flaxseed is full of omega-3s. When combined, these nutrients help maintain stable levels of brain serotonin and may help reduce your risk of depression.
For a chocolatey twist, add a teaspoon or two of raw cacao powder!
